i leave bait

i set them all:

wolf traps

bear traps

panther traps

shark hooks

my hands know

quick flicking

of switches

my heart knows

slow angry moans

i wilt, i gather

a museum

of predators

a gallery

of prey

no sharp teeth

no claws

no passionate, well-timed

death blows

my skin is tough

like rock

like diamond

they may drag me

to their cave

to their fortress

or leave me

in sunlight

i am hard

all over

primal pulse

aching jaw

and a low, soft growl

which animal

has captured

the other?

which will be

the first

to let go?

Tether

i dreamed of this

on long, lonely nights

when echoes of

half-truths from

a ragged tongue

split me in two

bone marrow and blood

i dreamed of you

leather and smoke

fire and ice

you sent your spirit

to a place

two thousand miles away

one hand

holding tight

at the base of my skull

one promise

one threat

at the base of my spine

i dreamed of this

as i held my heart

beneath the surface

dull, shallow waters

exsanguinated

slow beat

full stop

sun reflecting

your face still

obscured

you came to me

from brighter depths

across ten million

wasted moments

the ghost of you

grazed my flesh

skin pressed softly

to the glass

as she cut the line

my tether, broken

released at last

your strong, certain grasp

curled around

the back of my mind

to hold me against this

and your words

your quiet words

a mystery, cacophony

i will hunt them down

through the fortress

i will call for you, cry

i will draw you out

i will make you

strongest predator

hunting

strongest prey

i will submit completely

hard parts softened

soul bared and open

lips against your palm

pressed with love

and a steady, trusting silence
